The Dean of the Faculty of Science of the University of Ostrava announces a selection procedure to fill the following vacancy

  • Research assistant in the field of human geography, urban and regional development – in the frame of the project „Global Expert“

The above-mentioned position is to be filled within the framework of the project „Global Expert” by a young researcher having expertise in human or physical geography, urban and regional planning.

What we offer:

We offer an exciting position in an international scientific environment. The successful candidate will be involved in research on transformation, governance and planning of urban and peri-urban open spaces. The main case study area will be the Ostrava conurbation, which as a transforming landscape offers the opportunity to experiment with different analytical methods and to test different governance or planning prototypes. The research will also include comparative studies between open spaces located in the contexts of the Global North and the Global South. The research will be developed in close collaboration with international research institutions from Europe and beyond, and with the support of scientific networks such as the Global Land-use Project (GLP) or the International Association of Landscape Ecology (IALE).

During the employment, the successful candidate will be able to strengthen his/her international research profile, develop his/her own scientific ideas under the supervision of senior researchers from the Czech Republic and abroad. The successful candidate will also be able to work on his/her Ph.D. thesis.

Job description

We expect that the selected Excellent Foreign Researcher will

  • Work with collection and analysis of qualitative and quantitative data concerning urban and peri-urban open spaces in Ostrava and in Global North / Global South regions / cities.
  • Work with statistical analysis of data characterizing urban and peri-urban open spaces
  • Work with GIS or remote sensing analyses of processes related to the transformation of open spaces in the Global North and Global South
  • Coordination of project applications for the Czech research grants; support research project applications to international calls;
  • Establishing and maintaining contacts with local representatives of public administration and other stakeholders from the Ostrava region
  • Contribution to the publication of research results in international peer-reviewed journals
  • Present research results at scientific conferences

Qualifications and other requirements

  • Master's degree in human or physical geography or related field
  • Basic knowledge of quantitative and/or qualitative research methods and techniques
  • EU research level: R1 First stage researcher (up to PhD level)
  • Fluent English, comparable to C1 level or above
  • Independent, responsible and creative approach to work in an international research environment

Expected start date

  • 1st of March, 2025 (or by agreement), Fixed-term contract for 24 months

Estimated amount of work

  • 1 vacancy at 0,5 FTE

Wage conditions

  • According to the Wage Regulations of the University of Ostrava and for the requirements of the “Global Expert” project, i.e. 0.5 FTE = 33,000 CZK before tax
