The Dean of the Faculty of Science of the University of Ostrava announces a job vacancy at the Department of Physics

  • VP3 Leader/Excellent Researcher in the LERCO project

New position filled in accordance with the conditions of the Life Environment Research Center Ostrava (LERCO), project reg. no. CZ.10.03.01/00/22_003/0000003, Research Program 3 (Modeling and Simulation).

Expected start date:

  • 1st of August 2026 (or by agreement)

Estimated amount of work:

  • 100%, or as agreed
  • definite period

Job responsibilities:

  • Independent solution of complex scientific research/development tasks in the area of modeling of interactions of molecules with surfaces, their reactivity and modeling for environmental chemistry or biochemistry. Use of machine-learning potentials in the given area of modeling.
  • Coordination of scientific activities of other team members in Research Program 3 (RP3) "Modeling and Simulation" of the LERCO project.
  • Initiation and coordination of research projects, preparation of project proposals aimed at strengthening the development of research in the research areas of RP3.
  • Active publication activity corresponding to the position.
  • Presentation of project results at international conferences.
  • Responsibility for outputs and fulfillment of RP3 indicators.
  • Mentoring of junior staff and doctoral students.
  • Coordination of cooperation with RP2 "Biochemical and biophysical methods of analysis of biological systems", or other RPs and with foreign collaborators.

In the case of expanding the position to an academic staff member, further:

  • Supervision of dissertations, diploma and bachelor′s theses, defending final theses.
  • Supervision of doctoral, follow-up master′s and possibly bachelor′s degree courses.

Qualification Requirements:

  • Third-level university degree, at least 10 years of research experience.
  • Qualification according to the European Research Career Framework: R3 – Established / R4 – Leading (research group).
  • Knowledge of English at B2 level in written and oral communication.
  • Ph.D. in chemical physics, materials science, physical chemistry, inorganic chemistry or a related field.
  • Long-term achievement of top scientific performance in the field of modeling of interactions of molecules with surfaces, their reactivity or modeling for environmental chemistry or biochemistry (representation of publications in top journals in the given field as the first or corresponding author; at the date of joining at least 50 publications in impact journals, at least 2000 citations and H-index according to WoS at least 20).
  • Research using molecular force field modeling in the areas of (nano)materials or biomolecules is an advantage.
  • Willingness to cooperate with the above-mentioned VP2 "Biochemical and biophysical methods of analysis of biological systems".
  • Experience in supervising Ph.D. students (at least one successful graduate), or diploma theses and doctoral study subjects.
  • Experience with scientific project proposals (at least two successfully completed projects at a national grant agency or of comparable level as the main investigator).
  • International experience (demonstrable long-term internship or employment at a renowned foreign workplace, established international cooperation documented by joint publications).
  • Experience in leading a research team. Communication skills, management experience, ability to create and maintain a work team.

In the case of aspiration to expand the position to an academic staff member, also:

  • Experience in supervising university qualification theses.
  • Experience in leading bachelor′s and master′s study courses.
  • Previous positions as assistant professor, associate professor or full professor are an advantage.

For applicants with a doc./prof. title, suitable academic profile and pedagogical experience, it may also include a systematized position as an academic staff member in the Department of Physics.
