Annotation:The course objective is to critically analyse the process of the formation of ethnic, national and racial groups. A particular attention will be paid to micro- and macro-geography of ethnic, national and racist movements and conflicts and the socio-spatial production and maintenance of group boundaries. The primary framework for this analysis will be anthropological and sociological theories of ethnicity, nationalism, and racial thought, and contemporary cultural geographic approaches to space, place and landscape. After taking this course, the student should be able to critically reflect upon social reality and the politics of language and knowledge as well as to analyse sources, dynamics, and spatial manifestations of ethno-national and racial conflicts in various places in the world.
