Geographers from 10 Countries Coming to Ostrava

The Department of Social Geography and Regional Development has prepared another edition of International Teaching Week. For the second time this year, from 19 to 23 October, the Faculty of Science, University of Ostrava, will host a packed programme of lectures and discussions with specialists in political, economic and cultural geography.

Social geographers from the Faculty of Science will welcome guests from ten countries to the Hladnov campus. Thanks in part to support from the European Union’s Erasmus+ International Credit Mobility programme and CEEPUS, academics from universities in Argentina, Armenia, Georgia, Indonesia, South Korea, Hungary, Morocco, Poland, Taiwan and Ukraine will come to Ostrava.

“This October edition of our event is the most extensive yet, and I would like to invite everyone interested in political, economic and cultural geographies to join us,” says Dr Lukáš Laš, the main organiser of the event.

Over five days, the programme will cover a wide range of topics, including geopolitics, migration and urban change, the relationship between artificial intelligence and democracy, nationalism, regional development and sustainability. Other sessions will focus on GIS, cartography, environmental risks, and socio-economic change in Latin America and Asia.

The lectures are organised into thematic blocks and will offer different perspectives on contemporary social and spatial processes across Europe, Asia, Africa and Latin America. The programme combines political, economic and cultural geography with case studies from different parts of the world.

The Department of Social Geography and Regional Development is organising International Teaching Week for the fourth time. The programme is open not only to geography students, but to anyone interested in current social, political and economic developments around the world.
