Anotation | What is the first thing that pops into mind when thinking about evolution? Is it spectacular transformations such as the process that resulted in the amazing diversity of flower shapes, scents, and pollination strategies in orchids over the course of 80 million years? We often think of evolution as a very slow process, taking course over thousands of generations, which changes the population organisms to unrecognizable extents from their ancestors. However, evolution also occurs on much smaller, less spectacular scales all the time. Some of these transformations can happen over the course of a handful of generations. The final result of such an evolutionary process is not an incredible transformation like orchid flowers that look like insects, but is nevertheless key for species survival, especially when they face sudden environmental changes. |
