Global Expert Project – The Potential of Renewable Organic Resources for CO2 Capture and Wastewater Treatment

Our research group, led by Prof. Dr. Sonia Zulfiqar, is dedicated to an innovative project focused on the utilization of renewable organic resources for selective CO2 capture and wastewater treatment. The goal of this project is to develop new strategies for transforming biomass into "smart" porous carbon materials that are highly effective for both selective CO2 capture and water purification.

We are confronted with two critical environmental problems: global warming caused by CO2 emissions and water pollution, which threatens health and ecosystems. Our methodology involves the use of renewable resources, such as agricultural and forestry biomass residues, as raw materials for the development of new porous materials. These innovations provide ecological, affordable, and sustainable solutions for CO2 capture and wastewater treatment, significantly contributing to the protection of our planet.

The project includes the establishment of a new research team at the Department of Chemistry, Faculty of Science, University of Ostrava, focusing on the development of carbon materials from biomass for CO2 capture and water purification. The project expects to publish 10 scientific papers in quality journals and to prepare and submit at least one research project at the EU level.

The project is implemented with the financial support of the statutory city of Ostrava.
