AnotationDespite a massive increase of studies of microbiome composition in the guts of herbivorous insects, the relative importance of stochastic and deterministic processes governing their assembly has not been intensively studied yet. Applying the controlled experiments and modern biochemical and molecular methods (NGS), together with concepts and statistical tools used in macroecology, can significantly improve the understanding of assembly dynamics of herbivores gut microbiomes. Comprehensive data will reveal the effect of host plants and their secondary metabolites (SMs), environmental/host filtering in guts, and interactions among microbes, enabling us to understand coevolution between microbiomes and insects. The predictions of the structure of microbiomes should be possible once the main processes governing their assembly are identified and quantified.
